Now that I’m on the topic of foods….

I thought I’d share a favorite of mine from growing up. Every time we would visit my Grandma in Pennsylvania or if she visited us…..we would get Tastykakes. These are the best things ever. Now, some members of my family liked different kinds, but to me – these are THE BEST!

If you put them in the freezer they are DIVINE! So so good. While we were in Baltimore this summer, we found them at a gas station on our way to Ocean City! I was so stoked! Michelle (my sister-in-law) probably thought I was crazy, but she told me they had them at the grocery store by her house. Needless to say, LOTS made it back in our luggage! I was really really nice, and distributed them to the rest of my family that lives in Texas.

They do not sell these here in Texas and they didn’t have them in the midwest where I grew up either. (Is Texas considered Southern or the Midwest??) But I am sure all you east-coasters know all about TastyKakes!

And don’t even get me started on frozen Thin Mints (the Girl Scout cookies)…..what’s my deal with frozen cookies? Seriously – so so good. Did you know that Girl Scout cookies have their own myspace page?? How weird is that!?!  And then there’s that ice cream made by Edy’s…..YUM!

And it is a sad day – the Peppermint Mocha creamer from coffeemate is no more. It’s retired for the season. So sad. I love that stuff!! I tried using white chocolate creamer and putting a candy cane in my coffee……it wasn’t the same.

  • I’ve never had a Tastykakes here but next time I visit my in-laws I’ll check them out. I swear that they put something in Girl Scout cookies that makes them addictive. I crave them all year long and then buy enough boxes to get me through the whole year. Trouble is, they never last through that 1st month and then I’m craving them until the next cookie sale 11 months later. Thin Mint and Tagalongs…highly addictive!!!

  • We live in NJ, so I have always LOVED tastycakes. How about this one….there is a local brand of ice cream here called Turkey Hill from Lancaster, Pa that has KandyKakes icecream. Oh my! Addicting…if you can find it. The grocery store is always sold out of it. Mmmmmmmm.

  • Ohhhh, the Tastykakes are to die for aren’t they! I was born & raised here in PA and could not image my life without them! If ya ever need a fix Emily…give me a yell. I would gladly ship you some down!
Keep up the wonderful work on your blog! I enjoy visiting everyday!

I grew up in CT and never heard of tastycakes. They sure look yummy though. On the other hand I can never get enough of Thin Mints in the freezer. Mmm, mmm, mmm!

  • Pam

Well this East Coast girl has never heard of Tastycakes but they look yummy!

And I’m not coming back here till you are done with food talk because I’m on a strict diet and I’m drooling all over my keyboard! 😉

  • I’m from Philly so I know of your obsession with the greatest sweetness in the world. We always bring a few back in our bags too whenever we head home.

  • i am gonna say Texas is Southern, or Western, Not mid west….but maybe you need to ask a Texan? hahahah
    now i am hungry!

I thought TastyKakes were something made up! I had no idea they were real (read about them in a non-fiction series). I think I’m glad they don’t sell them in Texas. Texas is neither – its just Texas! 🙂

  • Thin mints are my favorite! When I can’t get them I buy the Keebler Grasshoppers.

  • Oh My Goodness! I grew up in Philly so we always had Tastykakes – I like the coffee cakes and the jelly filled myself. Since I have moved to Virginia, I don’t buy them ever, they are expensive once they export them out of the PA area 🙂 But girl, I am right there with you on the frozen Thin Mints! My husband always buys me some when someone sells them at work because he knows I won’t buy them for myself, and they go right into the freezer! And, alas, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Peppermint Mocha Creamer – I put it in cocoa and coffee mixed together to get a mint mocha. I stocked up on it before it left the shelves! I think I will go make some right now!

Emily, you’re a woman after my own heart (another food geek!)! Yes, I’m disappointed that the seasonal coffee creamers are gone for the year but there’s always my favorite, Toffee Nut and Vanilla Caramel! MMMM! I’m with you on the frozen Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies! Those rock! I hoard my cookies and keep them frozen so long that it’s time to order GS again. I just broke out my Thin Mints from last year’s order to make room for this years…how crazy is that?! On the topic of food finds, be on the lookout for new Lean Cuisine Flatbread Melts coming to your grocery stores soon! Those are so good!

  • We eat a box of Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes every week in my house!! This isnt the *norm* for all households???? I had no idea some parts of the country were deprived of this delicacy…that is so sad…

  • mmmmmmm girl guide cookies!

  • nan

Here’s a way to get the “thin mints” taste when your out of the Girl Scout variety…..melt chocolate bark in the microwave, add about a 1/4 tsp. of peppermint extract and stir. Dip Ritz crackers in the melted chocolate and cool on waxed paper. Sprinkle with crushed up peppermint candies. I swear, they taste just like the thin mints. Made lots at Christmas and everyone loved them. Was thinking of using the white almond bark for Valentine’s Day. Yum!

If you have a Dollar General or Family Dollar or Big Lots near you check them for the seasonal creamer. i am not a coffee drinker but I know I saw that flavor at one of those places in the last month!
Not sure how long creamer can stay on the shelf, but those stores get the left overs and sell them cheap!

OH and one of my students just brought in her Girl scout cookie order form today!! It’s time!!!

  • Hey, wanna buy some thin mints??? 😉

Tee hee. But, seriously, you can . . . my daughter is selling them . . .

At least you get the creamers, we don’t get those in Canada yet? I would really love to try them.

  • Cindy

I’m here in Texas and I know about Tastykakes as my husband is from Harrisburg, PA and he introduced me. Yum Yum….

As for Big State of Texas….its stands on its own. Not Southern, Not Midwest, just “TEXAS,” Hee Hee….

  • Becca

Is there such a thing a coffee creamer addiction? If so, I think I have it too. I’ve taken superhuman precautions against withdrawal this year. I found a stash of the Eggnog (my favorite) at Winn Dixie then did research on the internet to see if you could freeze it. Well, I estimate I go through one container every 1.5 months so I have 6 of those babies in the freezer. Just enough to get me to the holiday season again. Whew…. Now I’m stoking an addiction to Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash and it seems to have mysteriously disappeared from supermarket shelves…. I’m gonna hunt those Tastycakes next time I’m shopping tho’

I went to college in Philly and so I had the pleasure of having Tastycakes! I don’t think it’s east coast.. just Philly area ? I’m in Boston and have never seen these up here. My friend who was from the Philly area had a way of opening them that was so strange. I wonder if it was a “known” thing or just her quirkiness! 🙂

  • I’ve never had a tastykake, but I’m super tempted to search the web and get some delivered they look so good!

  • Jennifer

k, never heard of tastykakes, but love so many things about it… First of all, the name: tastykakes. Sounds like cheezypoofs. secondly, love the spelling of kakes.. It looks so cute. Thirdly, I can totally hear the enthusiasm through the computer when you were typing about those tastykakes. And, I totally understand the disappointment of retired seasonal items. I was disappointed that I never found the white chocolate mocha that one of the creamers released. I looked for it everywhere. I like the comment on trying a biglots. What a great idea!!

  • Sonya

Thin Mints are just amazing. I’m originally from Oregon but now live in the netherlands and they dont have the mints here and they are the BEST when frozen. I also miss peanutbutter cups..cant find those here either…dutch people dont like peanutbutter mixed with anything.

  • Carol

I was born and raised in eastern PA and weened on Tastykakes! Anytime you need some, just drop me a line and I’ll gladly send some your way! My favs were the butterscotch krimpets. Simply divine! My hubby is hooked on those Girl Scout thin mints while I always go for the chocolate peanut-butter wafers. Never tried the coffeemate you described though – I’m too hooked on the chocolate raspberry flavor myself 🙂 Is it time to eat yet?!

PS no counting your sister is in China and you are inTX!!

  • Sally (CKMom)

Came here expecting to see a card, saw TastyKakes instead. Trying to be good and avoid the GS cookies this year, but I love the TK products, and living in PA have easy access to them. If you ever have a craving let me know, I’ll mail ya some.

  • I too grew up on Tastykakes (being from upstate NY), and when I went to college in KY I was horrified to discover that they weren’t available! My dad used to ship me CASES of them and I would dole them out to other students from the PA/NY/MJ area. I could have made a mint selling them if I’d been smart! *chuckle*
My favorite are (and always have been) the Butterscotch Krumpets, but most of my family and friends prefer the PB Candy cakes, like you.

    Thanks for the memories!

  • Never heard of Tastykakes, and I grew up mostly North and Midwest. I do miss Hostess Ho Ho’s, you can’t find them here in Texas…and I miss those..

I am with you on thin mints..they are best in the freezer and it is Girl Scout Cookie time…Woo Hoo!!! That eggplant looks so yummy…I will try that recipe, my duaghter is a noodle and parmesean ‘freak”…I am so with you on not wasting that yummy delightful dish!

Tastykakes are to die for! And it is ashame that they aren’t sold here in Texas. I am originally from NJ but now live north of Houston and dearly miss my Tastykakes! Texas is definitely southern by-the-way. LOL.

  • You know I’m not sure what Texas is either. Living in Tennessee I don’t consider it part of “the south.” Maybe Texas doesn’t fall into a region.. other than the region of TEXAS.

Love some Thin Mints. I’ve already ordered mine, and my freezer is waiting for them!

Oh, you enabler, you! Some of us are of an age where we don’t dare put these things anywhere near our oral oriface. We are off of high fructose corn syrup, artifical sweetners and trans fats, (Oh what I would give for a double stuff Oreo about now). I remember Tastykakes in Ohio, though. Back to baking everything from scratch now….Banana Split Cake today for Bible study. Real butter, real sugar, I figure my body knows what to do with that stuff in moderation. I mill my own wheat for my bread as well. Extra effort but oh so worth it. But man, oh man, do I sometimes wish my metabolism was younger,

  • Harriet Skelly

Hi emily – I am from Philadelphia where they make the Tastykakes. I live in California now and there are Philadelphia cheese steak stores here that sell the Tastykakes. There is an 800 number on the packaging so people can order then]=m and have them shipped anywhere. My favorites were butterscotch krimpets, the peanutbutter kandykakes and the chocolate creamies!! There are also some markets in Calif (SF bay area) that sell the Tastykakes now.

  • Desiree Rose

Okay so I know some of you are going to go nuts over this but I live around the corner in VA near a Mary Jane discount store and guess what they sell?? Yep Tastykakes but they are discounted!! So they have all kinds of types.. Even sugarfree.. I found out our mailman was diabetic and we gave him a box for Christmas.. BUT seriously.. I will totally ship these to you if you want me to!! We send them to all our relatives out west for Christmas.. We try to find odd shaped boxes to see how many we can fit in.. I urge you not to order them through their website because the totally price gouge you there.. Let me know and we can help you out!

  • Desiree Rose

PS- I forgot to mention we actutally have seasonal ones that are just like the peanut butter type ones but flavored.. Halloween is spooky coconut Easter is marshmellow and Christmas is mint..

  • Sonia

I grew in and finally moved back to central PA were we LOVE tastykakes! We lived in Denver CO for 7 years and care packages filled with hubby’s favorite cream filled coffee kakes and my favorite butterscotch krimpets were sent to us often! I actually have a receipe for making your own kandy cakes, email me if you want to try it. And right now I’m hooked on Creme Brulee creamer, yum!

  • I am so with you about the peppermint creamer man! I LOVE that stuff!!! I stock up during the Christmas season, but it doesn’t last long! Right now, I am loving the creme brulee! And….. thanks for reminding me that it’s Girl Scout cookie time in our area! Should be getting our cookies in a couple weeks!

  • Wow, lots of comments on this one. I am specifically commenting on Tastycakes. My Dad is from a city in NJ that is right next to Philadelphia. Whenever I went there (from Utah) I would always want the butterscotch?? ones. Unbelievable. Sometimes my uncles will bring him a few boxes, and I’m JEALOUS. Maybe I can find a kind soul to ship me some??? Any commenters wanna help out???

Also, YUM GS Cookies!!! I just got the email that it’s time to order! It’s the only good thing that comes out of the months after Christmas.
